OLD STONE JAIL, MARIPOSA, CALIFORNIA

5012 Bullion Street, Mariposa, California

One of several old jails in Mariposa, California, the 33 x 26 foot structure was built in 1858 from granite blocks quarried near Mormon Bar (about two miles south), at a cost of $14,744. Originally there were two stories and a gallows at the east end, but a fire in 1892 gutted the building. The lone occupant at the time died in the fire. The upper story was removed during reconstruction. The Old Stone Jail was condemned in 1963 and replaced by a facility near the Mariposa County Courthouse. There is parking near the old jail and you can look through the windows.
